Conductor/Clinician

My teaching career at Palatine High School has afforded me the tools and experience to be a successful and effective clinician, conductor and adjudicator for music festivals and competitions. I have conducted and coached concert bands, jazz ensembles, marching bands and chamber music groups. I have also directed pit orchestras for school productions of Broadway shows. My approach is positive, educational, friendly and performance driven.

I continue my journey of life-long learning by attending a number of conducting clinics, motivational classes and concert performances.

I have had the distinct pleasure of working with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on various projects and performances that involved young, developing musicians. By taking advantage of attending many CSO concerts each year; I not only get to hear remarkable playing; but observe a variety of conductors as they lead one of the greatest orchestras in the world.

My mentor is the late John P. Paynter – Director of Bands at Northwestern University. I had the fortune of taking conducting lessons from Mr. Paynter before, during and after my masters degree program at NU. Mr. Paynter exemplified the meaning of “master teacher” as a conductor, arranger, mentor, educator and administrator. What a privilege for me to study with and play under this icon. His impact on my career is indescribable.

October 30, 2005 is a day that will remain in my memory forever. I had the honor of working with Clint Eastwood, as he directed the film “Flags of our Fathers.” I served as the musical coach for a number of my students who were chosen to perform in the movie as a small town band from the 1940s. I experienced another side of the music business and saw Clint Eastwood in action. Not only is Mr. Eastwood a marvelous actor; but his communication skills while directing and creating the particular mood and essence of a scene are uncanny. While working side by side with Mr. Eastwood on the set, I was able to learn many wonderful techniques and ways to bring out the very best in people who came from all walks of life.

A host of experiences have influenced my ability to be a positive role model for young musicians. There is no better feeling than to help develop the musical growth of an ensemble or an individual; even when they themselves, did not think it possible.
